Here you will find some examples of the work I've been creating for the last three years at kilnhouse studio. Although this site is not set up for sales, note that if the piece reads "for sale" you can contact me (via email or phone) to purchase. Otherwise just come in to kilnhouse!!
Here's my artist statement, which speaks to what my work is about:
I create functional and sculptural ceramic art. Within these creations my aim is to make work that is both elegant and rustic at the same time, conveying an authentic type of beauty.
I focus on making each piece completely one of a kind, with attention given to the smallest and unexpected details, such as the interiors of planters or the undersides of bowls. With a mixture of layered vintage and contemporary aesthetics I decorate each ceramic piece. For example juxtaposing vintage decals with commercial bright glossy pink glaze on a mug gives the user both a tactile and visual experience unlike more conventional pottery.
Porcelain cone 6 clay is what I use to create my work, both for hand-building and wheel-throwing. The light color contrasts itself against the rustic brown stains that I use to exploit textures, and it also allows glazes to shine the brightest. All pieces are fired in an electric kiln to vitrification and all functional ceramics are completely food safe.
With all of these things in mind, I like to leave a large element of my work to intuition. As a result of that, my ceramics are innately very feminine. Lots of lace, female characters and flowers are used to decorate the pieces. On top of that, tongue and cheek sayings are inscribed at times, for an element of humour and truth. These pieces are a celebration of life and more directly what it is to be a woman and love the visual world.
